So I'm over half way through Grand New Party: How Republicans can win the working class and save the American dream, and I must admit that it is a fascinating read. I'm typically a very fast reader, but the first half of the book is devoted to a history of working class policies since the Great Depression. While it is quite dry reading, historical context is critical to establishing legitimacy to new ideas.
As I am wading my way through Douthat and Salam's blueprint for the future of the Republican party and the working class, I am finding that many of their thoughts and observations can be applied to the current political climate of Washtenaw County, especially Ann Arbor. When I finish the book I plan on writing a post about this, as their arguments frame issues (especially issues facing the working class) in ways that I have never considered before.
